<abstract>
Background: This study examined the relationship between digital addiction and levels of social anxiety among Turkish adolescents aged 15–18.
Methods: This study employed the correlational research method, which is one of the quantitative research methods. Five hundred and thirty-nine adolescents aged 15–18 years volunteered to participate in the study. The adolescents who participated in the study were selected using a simple random sampling method. Data were collected using a Demographic Information Form and two scales: the Digital Addiction Scale for Teenagers (DAST), and the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A). Descriptive statistical methods, as well as Pearson's correlation and regression analyses, were employed to analyse the data.
Results: The average digital addiction and social anxiety scores for adolescents were found to be 37.66±11.58 and 41.05±15.09 points, respectively. Of the sub-dimensions, fear of negative evaluation was found to be higher than the others (15.73±6.86). A highly positive relationship was found between digital addiction and social anxiety in adolescents (r = .743). It was found that digital addiction predicted 15.4% of social anxiety levels in adolescents (R² = 0.154).
Conclusion: There are many factors affecting both digital addiction and social anxiety. The findings of the current study suggest that, rather than being a factor in itself, digital addiction may be an risk factor for social anxiety in adolescents aged 15–18.
</abstract>
