<abstract>
Background: The Cinderella complex is a widespread psychological and cultural phenomenon that limits women’s independence. Women with the Cinderella complex often feel inadequate and rely on men for emotional and economic support, which can lead to low productivity, lack of self-confidence, and avoidance of leadership roles. This study critically examined new trends in the Cinderella Complex. This study aimed to examine the current research status of the Cinderella complex from 2021 to 2025 and categorized the construct based on the nature of the available literature.
Methods: This study conducted a systematic review using seven electronic databases and followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines. The literature search included studies published between January 2021 and October 2025 across seven electronic databases. The electronic databases included PsycINFO, ProQuest, ResearchGate, PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and the Cochrane Library. Two research team members independently reviewed and determined the inclusion of each study. Each study was appraised and validated for quality using the JBICAT instrument. Content analysis was used for data analysis.
Results: Of the 85,551 records, only 10 studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Three main themes, which were closely linked to each other, emerged from the studies: Psychological determinants and correlates of the Cinderella complex (n=4), sociocultural and causal factors, including parenting and gender, role socialization (n=3), and the latest emerging perspectives in the educational, occupational, and relational contexts (n=3).
Conclusion: The findings reveal emerging research trends and the need for more cross-cultural empirical studies on women’s autonomy.
