<abstract>
Background: Providing appropriate information for women with breast cancer is one of the most important aspects of effective supportive care. This study aimed to determine the information needs and priorities of patients with breast cancer at different stages of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy treatment and their predicting factors.
Methods: This cross-sectional questionnaire survey was performed on 282 women with breast cancer who were referred to oncology clinics in Mashhad City, Iran, and recruited using a convenience sampling method. Information needs of patients were evaluated using the patient learning need scale (PLNS) across surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy groups. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), post-hoc Tukey test, and multiple linear regressions were performed using STATA software version 12.
Results: The results showed that women with cancer had high information needs during treatment (4.31±0.55 out of 5), and the information need score differed significantly across the three treatment stages (P=0.012). This difference was between the chemotherapy and the surgery and radiotherapy groups. Having a family history of breast cancer was found to be a predictive factor of the total PLNS score (β=9.18, 95% CI, 1.59%, 16.56%, P=0.01), indicating that patients with a family history of cancer expressed greater overall learning needs.
Conclusion: Women with breast cancer require extensive information on all domains of PLNS. Information needs are constant during the surgical, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy stages; however, the relative importance of these dimensions varies. Therefore, it is essential to implement a solid and well-organized plan to provide breast cancer patients with information at different stages of treatment. An educational program is recommended to address these patients’ physical problems and enable them to fulfill their family responsibilities.
</abstract>
