Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable diseaseand one of the most important riskfactorsforcardiovascular diseases. Educational interventions have been conducted to prevent and control hypertension. This systematic review tried tosummarizethe effectiveness of educational interventions aimed to improve thecontrol of blood pressure.
Methods: Searches were done between January 15, 2023 and June 20, 2023; in databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (for English articles); and SID, Iran Medex, and Magiran (for Persian articles). Educational intervention studies about merely controlling blood pressure were selected. The keywords used for the searches were Blood Pressure, Hypertension, Hypertensive, High Blood Pressure, HTN and Education, Health education, Educational intervention, Effectiveness, Interventions, Training methods. The Cochrane Risk of Bias (ROB) tool was used to determine the quality of selected studies. PRISMA guidelines and checklistwere used for reporting.
Results:After searching in the aforementioned electronic databases, 4467 related articles (2655 in English and 1812 in Persian) were retrieved. 2625 articles were duplicates and 1821 articles didn’t match the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were deleted. Finally, 21 studies (10 English articles and 11 Persian articles) entered the review. In these studies, various individual or community-based interventions including family-centered, person-centered, texting, training in group sessions, multiple interventions, and community-based interventions were applied.Different methods such as lectures, question and answer (Q&A), group discussion, face-to-face training, counseling, telephone consultation, and PowerPoint presentations were used for education. The results showed the positive effect of the designed educational interventions in controllinghypertension, howeverseems like studies aimed at self-care education were more effective.
Conclusions:Different types of educational interventions, and training methodswere effective in the control of hypertension.Educationalinterventionsare a cheap and applicable way to promote self-care behaviors in hypertensive patients.
