Abstract: (22 Views)
Background: Maternal mental health literacy can influence the pattern of help seeking in children, especially during adolescence. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between maternal mental health literacy and adolescents' attitudes and intentions to seek help.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 238 adolescent girls and their mothers in Saveh city, Iran, from September 2023 to March 2024 using a multistage cluster sampling method. Data were collected through the "Mental Health Literacy" (MHLS) questionnaire for mothers and the "Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help" (ATSPPH) and "Intention to Seek Help" (GHSQ) questionnaires for adolescents. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, independent t-tests, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) in SPSS version 20 software (significance level p<0.05).
Results: The mean age of adolescents was 15.27±1.24 years. The results of linear regression showed that age (β=–0.657, p=0.001), maternal education (β=0.623, p=0.001), and maternal mental health literacy (β=0.529, p=0.002) were significant predictors of adolescents’ attitudes toward help-seeking, and the model explained 28% of the variance in attitudes (R²=0.28).
Conclusion: The findings showed that mothers’ mental health literacy was significantly associated with adolescents’ attitudes and intentions to seek help. Promoting mental health literacy at the family level through community-based educational programs could lead to healthier help-seeking patterns in adolescents.
