Background: Iranian students are at high risk for cardiovascular disease. A valid tool to measure cardiovascular health-related behaviors is the first step toward preventing such diseases in this population. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate a cardiovascular health behavior scale for Iranian students.
Methods: This exploratory sequential mixed-methods study was conducted in 2024 among 684 students. Face and content validity were assessed. Construct validity was evaluated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA, CFA). Reliability was measured using McDonald's omega and Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Data were analyzed using AMOS, SPSS, and R software.
Results: Following a systematic review and interviews, an initial pool of 52 items was generated. After removing duplicates and merging similar items, all 52 items had an impact score above 1.5. Following content validity assessment, the number of items was reduced to 36, with a CVR ≥ 0.62 and a CVI ranging from 0.80 to 1. EFA yielded a final 15-item scale with a five-factor structure, which collectively accounted for 54.67% of the total variance. CFA indicated factor loadings ranging from 0.22 to 0.80. The model demonstrated a good fit (IFI, CFI, AGFI > 0.9; PCFI > 0.5; RMSEA = 0.048; CMIN/DF = 1.663). Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients for all five factors exceeded 0.8.
Conclusion: The Cardiovascular Health Behavior Scale for Iranian Students is a valid and reliable tool suitable for use in future research.
