Abstract:   (15 Views)
Background: Providing appropriate information for women with breast cancer is one of the most important aspects of an effective supportive care. The present study aimed to determine the information needs and priorities of patients with breast cancer at different stages of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy treatment and its predicting factors.
Methods: This cross-sectional questionnaire survey was performed on 282 women with breast cancer referring to oncology clinics in Mashhad recruited with convenience sampling method. Information needs of patients were evaluated with Patient Learning Need Scale (PLNS) at the groups of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. One-way ANOVA, post-hoc Tukey test, and multiple linear regression were performed using STATA software.
Results: The results showed that the information needs of women with cancer during treatment were high ((4.31±0.55) out of 5) and the information need score of women had a statistically significant difference in the three stages of treatment (P = 0.012). This difference was between the chemotherapy group and the two groups of surgery and radiotherapy. Having a family history of breast cancer was found the predictive factor of the total PLNS score (ᵦ=9.18, 95% CI: 1.59-16.56, p=0.01), indicating that patients with a family history of cancer expressed greater overall learning needs.
Conclusion: Women with breast cancer require a lot of information in all domains of PLNS. Information needs are constant during the surgical, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy stages, however, the relative importance of these dimensions varies. Therefore, it is essential to carry out a solid, and well-organized plan to give breast cancer patients with information at different parts of treatment. Development of an educational program is recommended for these patients to address their physical problems and enable them to fulfil their family responsibilities.
