Background: Nurse–patient communication plays a vital role in patients’ recovery, and assessing how nurses communicate with patients is crucial. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the health literacy (HL) nurse–patient communication questionnaire based on HL strategies.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 310 hospitalized patients in 2023. The questionnaire was developed based on existing literature. After that, validity (face validity, content validity, and confirmatory factor analysis) and reliability (Cronbach’s α and McDonald’s omega) were assessed. To analyze data, Amos software, version 24, JASP software, version 0.11.1, and SPSS  software, version  24 were used.
Results: All participants were women. Scale-content validity index/average for all items was 0.921, and the content validity ratio (CVR) was 0.910. In confirmatory factor analysis, only one item had a factor loading of less than 0.4, and after deleting this item (item 4: The nurse used pictures or visual aids to explain instructions) and based on the goodness-of-fit indices (root mean square error of approximation=0.074, adjusted goodness of fit index: 0.933, parsimonious normed fit index=0.658, and Tucker Lewis index=0.972), the HL nurse–patient communication questionnaire was confirmed. Based on the reliability results, Cronbach’s α was 0.858, and McDonald’s Omega was 0.893. Finally, the HL nurse–patient communication questionnaire, consisting of eight items, was approved.
Conclusion: The HL nurse–patient communication questionnaire, comprising8 items, is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating HL nurse–patient communication in hospitals and other healthcare settings.
