Background: Climate change anxiety has emerged as an important mental health concern among young people, particularly university students. This study aimed to determine the level of climate change anxiety and its relationship with selected sociodemographic factors among university students.
Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between March 2024 and September 2025 with 357 undergraduate students from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at Yozgat Bozok University. Data were collected online using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Climate Change Anxiety Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and one-way ANOVA were used for data analysis, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: The mean total score of the Climate Change Anxiety Scale was 26.8 ± 0.3, indicating an above-moderate level of climate anxiety. Climate anxiety levels were significantly higher among students living in dormitories and those from nuclear family structures (p < 0.05). Although female students and those with lower income levels had higher mean anxiety scores, these differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that climate change anxiety among university students is influenced not only by individual characteristics but also by contextual factors such as family structure and living environment. Finally, longitudinal and mediational model studies that include perceived social support and control levels are needed to better explain the impact of family type and housing conditions on climate anxiety. Such research will contribute to the evidence-based structuring of mental health policies for university youth.
