Abstract:   (25 Views)
Background: Appearance-related awareness, including body shape diagnosis and personal color recognition, refers to the recognition and understanding of one’s physical characteristics and has been recognized as a psychosocial health behavior associated with emotional well-being and self-evaluation. This study examined whether these appearance factors influence psychological health and self-esteem through perceptual processes and makeup behavior among Korean adults.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 528 adults aged 18–50 years. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling through online and public consumer settings. Measures assessed body shape diagnosis perception, personal color recognition, perception subdomains (cognitive, social, situational, behavioral, and emotional awareness), makeup behavior, psychological health, and self-esteem. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, regression models, and mediation analyses were performed.
Results: Appearance-related awareness was positively associated with perceptual factors, which in turn were significantly related to makeup behavior, psychological health, and self-esteem. Mediation analysis indicated that appearance factors were not directly associated with psychological outcomes but influenced them indirectly through perceptual processes and appearance-management behaviors.

Conclusion: These findings suggest that the psychological meaning and interpretation of appearance may play a key role in linking appearance awareness to well-being and self-esteem. Structured appearance-recognition practices may support positive self-perception
and adaptive appearance behaviors. However, the results should be interpreted cautiously due to the cross-sectional design and the focus on a Korean adult sample.
